How to make Kashmiri Tea کشمیری چائے at home?
کشمیری چائے Kashmiri Chai (Pink Tea) is a traditional tea from the land of Kashmir. This tea is popularly drunk in Kashmir as well as all over Pakistan and India too. This Kashmiri Chai (Pink Tea) tea is cozy, sweet, thick, creamy, flavourful and deep pink. Plus, it tastes and looks more delicious when garnished with crushed Pistachios. Adding the Kashmir tea leaves or the green tea leaves give the exact pink colour to this tea.
However, this tea is not sweet in its flavor. It is salty to taste and different from other varieties of teas. I couldn’t exactly tell you the taste in one word. It is a bit salty, sweet, milky and crunchy with nuts. If you are a serious Tea-Lover like me, then this Kashmiri tea is a must-try recipe for you and I can bet you will love it!
Ingredients for Kashmiri Tea
---------------------- Cold water – 1 cup
- Milk – 1 cup
- 1 cup of ice cubes
- Kashmiri tea leaves or Green tea leaves – 2 heaped TBSP
- Baking Soda – 1/2 TSP
- Salt – 1/4 TSP
- Cinnamon stick – 1 (2 inches)
- 2-3 crushed cardamom pods
- Sugar to taste (optional)
- Handful chopped pistachios
How to make Kashmiri Tea
---------------------- Place a pan of water on high heat until the water is boiling.
- Sprinkle tea leaves with the spices and cover the pan.
- Lower the flame and allow to brew for 15 minutes.
- Remove the brew from the heat and add a pinch of baking soda.
- The tea will start frothing and turn a much richer red colour. At this point, add the ice cubes and stir until they have all melted. (I couldn’t tell you the particular science behind this process but I think the sodium and extreme change in temperature is what catalyzes the tea to turn red)
- Finally, remove the Kashmiri tea from the heat and pour in a cup of milk a little at a time until you get your desired pink colour.
- Strain the Kashmiri tea and add chopped pistachios before serving.
Aromatic, Cozy and crunchy Kashmiri Tea is ready!! Enjoy!!

Recipe Note: If your Kashmiri Tea doesn’t turn pink, it is most likely because you didn’t brew it long enough or because you didn’t follow the order of baking soda, then ice, then milk.
